A new study from the University of St Andrews has found a link between long-term exposure to air pollution and increased rates of both mental and physical illness. The research, which analyzed 16 years of health and pollution data in Scotland, identified connections between cumulative exposure to pollutants and hospital admissions for a range of conditions.

Led by Dr. Mary Abed Al Ahad, the team from the School of Geography and Sustainable Development examined the health effects of prolonged exposure to ambient air pollution. Previous research has focused more on deaths than hospital admissions and on physical rather than mental health.

The researchers utilized data from the Scottish Longitudinal Study, a dataset representing 5% of Scotland’s population. This included demographic information and health records for 202,237 individuals aged 17 and above, tracked from 2002 to 2017.

The study investigated the impact of four pollutants commonly associated with road traffic and industry: nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), particulate matter (PM10), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). These pollutants were linked to annual residential exposure data.

Results showed that higher cumulative exposure to NO₂, PM10, and PM2.5 was associated with increased hospital admissions for all causes, including cardiovascular, respiratory, and infectious diseases. Notably, respiratory disease admissions increased by just over 4% for every 1 μg/m³ rise in PM2.5 and by just over 1% for the same increase in NO₂.

The study also revealed a connection between air pollution and mental health. NO₂ exposure was linked to a higher rate of hospital admissions for mental illness and behavioral disorders, while SO₂ was primarily associated with respiratory disease admissions.

While the researchers acknowledged limitations, such as the use of annual exposure assessments and residential postcodes as proxies for individual exposure, the findings highlight the need for action. The study suggests that stricter environmental regulations, long-term planning, and a shift towards renewable energy could significantly reduce the health burden associated with air pollution.

Measures such as zero-emission zones and incentives for renewable energy in transport and energy production are proposed as effective strategies to mitigate exposure and improve public health.
