Chiesi, an international biopharmaceutical group, has launched a campaign called Unscripted Beginnings to raise awareness about premature births. The campaign, which includes a documentary, aims to shed light on the unique challenges and hopes surrounding premature births.
Premature births affect over 13 million babies annually, with 1 in 10 babies born preterm. According to the report, related deaths account for 1 million lives lost.
Premature births disrupt the expected narrative of a pregnancy, intertwining vulnerability with resilience. The Unscripted Beginnings campaign spotlights the experiences of families, healthcare professionals, and the role of neonatal intensive care units.
Philip Breesch, Executive Vice President of Franchise Care at Chiesi, says the campaign aims to educate the public about the challenges faced by premature infants and their families. By showcasing both the fragility and resilience of these babies, Chiesi emphasizes the critical importance of specialized care.
Chiesi has been committed to neonatology for over three decades, working alongside healthcare professionals to improve outcomes for premature infants. They invest in research and innovative treatments that enhance neonatal care, and share best practices to empower NICU teams.
Philip Breesch notes that Chiesi’s dedication has contributed to improved survival rates and health outcomes for preterm infants across more than 80 countries. Chiesi supports patient associations and families during their challenging journeys.

The Edge of Life, a documentary supported by Chiesi, provides a unique look inside the NICU. Director Giulio Di Sturco was inspired to create the project after meeting a neonatology expert and realizing the emotional and challenging world of neonatology.
Giulio Di Sturco’s project started as a photography project but evolved into a film after a week in Bristol’s NICU. The documentary uses formats like 360-degree footage from incubators to simulate the perspective of a newborn.
The goal of the documentary is to provide an intimate look into the intensity of premature neonatal care, touching on both medical aspects and the emotional journey of those involved. Di Sturco aims to bring people into the “Bubble” of the NICU, to convey the intensity and dedication of doctors, nurses, and families.
Chiesi hopes to raise awareness about the significant issue of prematurity and the importance of specialized care for premature infants through the Unscripted Beginnings campaign and The Edge of Life documentary.
