
The pharmaceutical industry is moving toward localized supply chains and reshoring as key factors shaping its future. The 2021 CPhI Annual Report outlines trends in manufacturing, therapeutics, and technology expected to unfold by 2030, focusing on automation, artificial intelligence, and real-time drug monitoring as major improvements.
The U.S. and China will likely lead the market, making up about half of its total value, with Europe and Japan trailing behind. Short-term efforts to strengthen supply chains are speeding up broader changes, including faster adoption of advanced process controls, standardized reporting, and digital infrastructure upgrades.
Supply chain shifts reshape manufacturing
Orhan Caglayan, Brand Director at CPhI Worldwide, stated the pandemic accelerated a decade of innovation in just five years. “Pharma companies are searching for new partners, ingredient suppliers, and contract service providers,” he explained. “The supply chain is now competing to align not only with new treatments but also with technologies that can produce better—and potentially more affordable—medicines.”

This momentum has led to earlier and wider partnering discussions, with businesses expanding their networks to keep up. Continuous processing, Process Analytical Technology (PAT), and Process Analytical Chemistry (PAC) are coming together to enhance product quality while cutting costs. Government initiatives to bring manufacturing back and improve supply chain stability have also driven these developments.
Bikash Chatterjee, CEO of Pharmatech Associates, noted the strategic national stockpile could help advance manufacturing methods. “The main advantage is reducing waste and poor-quality costs, which lowers overall expenses,” he said. “This might make the industry more comfortable with real-time release, allowing manufacturers to protect profits amid pricing pressures while delivering better therapies.”
The report predicts that within the next five years, health systems will introduce much greater interoperability and build a strong electronic health record network to utilize real evidence-backed decisions. Aurelio Arias, engagement manager of Thought Leadership at IQVIA, said: “The tech sector has an important part to play in this puzzle; where they are able to collect data on people before they become patients on their mass-market smart devices. To further the value from their data, tech companies must find ways of working with the healthcare sector that leverages their strong consumer focus and unique platforms in a way that works within the existing regulations and ethical frameworks of healthcare.”

Therapeutics and technology evolve together
Both Arias and Chatterjee point to increased digital innovation in the supply chain to help transform efficiencies in manufacturing. The report foresees rapid growth in new areas like mRNA vaccines, alongside the personalisation of therapeutics delivered at far larger scale.
These forecasts reflect a broader industry movement toward flexibility, cost control, and resilience. While the pandemic revealed weaknesses in global supply chains, it also pushed the industry to rethink its strategies, favoring adaptable manufacturing models over older ones.
For now, the industry is focused on meeting immediate needs while building a foundation for long-term innovation. The shift toward local production isn’t just about security—it’s about enabling faster, more adaptable manufacturing. That could lead to more reliable medicine access, lower costs, and new collaboration opportunities across the sector.
